General description of the collection: The Ellis W. Williamson papers document the 40-year career and post-retirement activities of an infantry officer. The collection contains degrees and diplomas, an autobiography, Williamson's personal military records, certificates, correspondence, commander's notes and memoranda, topographical maps of Vietnam, booklets, training aids, speeches, newspaper and journal articles (re: Williamson), magazines, presentation material, clippings, photographs, and scrapbooks. The Ellis W. Williamson papers are organized in three series. Series I: Papers, 1917-2002, 8 boxes, covers Williamson's military career as well as his retirement. Included are service records, certificates, commander's notes and memoranda, correspondence, degrees and diplomas, autobiography, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, journal articles, magazines, and Airborne Association newsletters. Series II: Photographs, 1936-2001, 3 boxes, 530 images, personal and official photographs. Ellis W. Williamson was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He was born in Raeford, North Carolina, on June 12, 1918; entered military service as a private in the 120th Infantry Regiment Band, 30th Division, North Carolina National Guard in 1936; was commissioned a second lieutenant in March 1941; and served in five campaigns throughout WWII. Williamson later served in Korea as a staff officer; commanded the 13th Infantry Regiment at Fort Carson and West Germany; commanded the 173rd Airborne Br...
